News from the Schlund Family serving the Lord in Mexico City

A New House in Xochimilco

The neighborhood of Xochimilco was hit hard during the 2017 earthquake. Many homes were damaged or destroyed. Lutheran Hour Ministries in Mexico (Cristo Para Todas Las Naciones) has been ministering to families affected by the earthquake. With funds from Lutheran Hour Ministries and Lutheran Disaster Response, CPTLN is working on building homes for families who lost theirs. After years of challenges, the first house was finally completed.

Earlier this month, Andrew accompanied Pastor Benjamín and the CPTLN team to dedicate the new house. The family is very grateful for their new home. CPTLN hopes to make more houses for families in Xochimilco soon.

As they were getting ready to leave, Pastor Benjamín and Andrew were flagged down by two women. The women’s mother was very sick, and they were looking for a pastor to pray with her. Pastor Benjamín prayed shared the gospel with the family. While the woman was not sick with COVID, Xochimilco has been one of the hot spots in Mexico City.

Ministry during COVID-19

The coronavirus pandemic has greatly affected Mexico, with over 370,000 confirmed cases and 41,000 deaths. Many members of the Lutheran churches across Mexico have gotten sick, and some have lost family members to this disease. We are continuing worship online across Mexico. Every Sunday, a different church livestreams a service for the entire Mexican synod. Andrew helps facilitate the streaming, and he coordinates Zoom schedules so pastors can continue having bible studies and confirmation classes with their members. The Lutheran Synod of Mexico distributes care packages with food and toiletries to families in need. Much of Andrew’s work for the Lutheran Synod of Mexico and the seminary is done online. Some conferences and courses were either postponed or transitioned to virtual conferences.

Throughout the pandemic, CPTLN has hosted several online seminars. Topics included equipping Christian educators and supporting victims of domestic violence.

We have been staying at home as much as possible since the end of March. Andrew had a virtual graduation ceremony for his Masters of Sacred Theology, and both girls celebrated their birthdays during lockdown.

La Biblia en Español

Prefiero que fluya la justicia como un río, y que el derecho mane como un impetuoso arroyo.

Amόs 5:24

But let justice roll down like waters,
and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream.

Amos 5:24
