NEWS FROM BECKY BARTELT
…Serving the Lord in Taiwan

Preparing and Sharing:

Thank you for your interest in the work God is doing in Asia. I am excited to share that I will be leaving for Taiwan in January 2023. After a time of listening and learning, I will be working at the request of Lutheran churches in Asia to help develop music programs in churches, work on hymnal projects together with the local churches and Deaconess Sandra Rhein and start an outreach conservatory program.

This summer I have been busy learning and sharing. I spent July in Zoom sessions and one full week in St. Louis preparing my presentation and learning how to share God’s story in Asia.

Above is a picture from my first presentation at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in O’Fallon, MO. In the picture is Lucy, the wife of one of my mentors from the International Center in St. Louis. This is a common pose when taking pictures in Taiwan. “Interestingly,” one of the pastors at Holy Cross is the son of the pastor who encouraged me to serve as a volunteer missionary in Kazakhstan after college.

Following the week in St. Louis, I am continuing to learn via Zoom and schedule and give presentations. I am also working hard to prepare my house in Lincoln, NE to sell in September, donate a lot of things, store a few things and select a few things to possibly bring with me. Thank you for your prayers as I continue this process and work to schedule more opportunities to share my story in churches. If you’d like to schedule a presentation, please contact me at rebecca.bartelt@lcms.org.

Preparing and Sharing, Part II

On Sunday, August 14th I had the opportunity to share with my fellow members at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lincoln, NE. It was so nice to present to people who know and love me. I truly appreciate the way they have welcomed me into the congregation these past three years especially during the COVID time. Thanks for your welcome, prayers and support Immanuel!

Meeting My New Colleagues:

On July 27, I got to meet two of my new colleagues when I went to hear Barb Rebentisch’s presentation at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Omaha, NE. I learned about the false religions prevalent in Taiwan. Barb shared that while in Nebraska there are more cows than people, in Taiwan there are more gods than people. I also learned a little bit about life in Taiwan from Barb. Thanks for welcoming me, Barb!

My Theme Verse:

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:20-21)

This has been my favorite Bible verse for a long time because of the mind-boggling truth that Jesus took on all my sin and all of yours so that you and I could be completely 100% righteous. We don’t look or appear righteous, but are the righteousness of God. It is this amazing news that I hope to share and help people proclaim in music in Taiwan.

As I have accepted this call to Taiwan, the beginning of this verse has become even more significant. God is appealing to others through us. We are God’s ambassadors. We are the masks of God. This is your vocation and mine to implore others to be reconciled to God by the power of the Holy Spirit.

May God bless all of us in sharing this amazing truth!
