First Tropical Storm of the Hurricane Season

Tropical Storm Isaías was the biggest storm the team has experienced this year. Neighborhoods that never experienced flooding were flooded during the storm because of the large amount of rain that came in a short period of time. The most damage experience by the storm was seen in Mayaguez Evangelist William Torres’ home was flooded. The mission team was able to help clean and clear his home. The team also helped clean mud and cut branches for Principe de Paz church members and their neighbors. The month of August has been spent preparing for hurricanes by buying supplies and counting inventory in order to be prepared for any possible hurricanes.

Art Outreach

The art outreach done over both church’s Facebook pages has expanded to include more participants around the Latin American Region. Sisters in Christ from Lutheran Churches in the Dominican Republic, Peru, Argentina, and Puerto Rico have come together to host virtual art classes every Friday. Deaconess Christel Neuendorf and Deaconess Katie Ziegler Weber (Argentina) created an art curriculum centered on God’s promises. Each month has a different theme for the crafts that correspond to a bible verse or story. This month’s theme is stars. Week one was taught by Ruth Maita, week two by Yoxandris Maita (DR), week three by Rosalva Chamba (Peru) and then week four will be taught by Deaconess Christel Neuendorf. The women taught that the God who created and named the stars cares even more for each of them and knows them by name. The hope is that these classes will soon be – God willing – in person to make more connection in our communities.

Project Manager James Krey has moved to Ponce to be close to the major project involving the new church and Mercy house buildings. James is working closely with the team in Ponce in preparing the buildings to be renovated.

Missionary Ashley Lehr was officially installed as a missionary in Puerto Rico on July 26th at Principe de Paz in Mayagüez.
