Alyssa Anders currently serves in St. Petersburg, Russia. She works with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria (an LCMS partner church) enabling them with English as a Second Language skills. Trained as a teacher, Alyssa’s goal is to help the ministers, workers and members of this church body to better interact with other Lutherans around the world and in their country so they can work in harmony to build up the Body of Christ and spread the Gospel message. During the Soviet era, the Ingrian Church experienced persecution and many church activities were suppressed or shut down. Now parishes are slowly being re-founded and churches are opening their doors. A lot of work still needs to be done, and Russian Lutherans need support from their brothers and sisters in Christ around the globe.
Alyssa was raised in Westland, Mich., just outside of Detroit. Her home congregation, Christ Our Savior Lutheran Church, is nearby in Livonia, Mich. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree in history from Thomas Edison State College, Trenton, N.J., and a master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) from Eastern Michigan University, Ypsilanti. Her interest in serving others through teaching has taken her around the world. Previously, she worked in curriculum development and English-language tutoring, and with community adult education programs. In addition to teaching, she enjoys curling up with a good book, studying languages (Russian currently), playing musical instruments, exploring new places and experimenting in the kitchen.
Pray for Alyssa as she serves in Russia. Ask God to help her adjust to the Russian culture. Pray God gives her peace as she learns the Russian language. Ask God to provide clear and open opportunities for Alyssa to teach and help the church in St. Petersburg. Pray God brings the right people into Alyssa’s life, individuals who can help and support her and who she can, in turn, help and support. Let us give thanks that Alyssa is serving in this part of the world.
